let me introduce myself...
I am Jessica Pershick, a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) in Ottawa, ON.
I work privately with clients at JMP Counselling as well as part time at
Serenity Renewal for Families (non-for-profit charity).
I have completed my entry to practice exam and currently in the process of transitioning from "Qualifying" to full registration status with the CRPO.
I graduated with a Masters in Clinical and Counselling Psychology from Adler Professional Graduate School in 2020. I completed an MRP (qualitative research paper) examining how therapists' "Use of Self" can enhance the therapeutic alliance. I have identified three personal qualities of the therapist that foster the connection between therapist and client: experiential knowledge, therapeutic presence, and authenticity. These qualities are enhanced when therapists do their own personal work.
I am a proud advocate for mental health. I was motivated towards the study of psychology, a career as a psychotherapist, and my research from my own lived experiences. I believe attending my own therapy has been instrumental in my understanding of client issues and cultivation of my skills as a psychotherapist. Because of my experiences in therapy, I can empathize with the vulnerability of being a client.
My passion is supporting others on their own journey of healing.

Did you know
Counselling can be a rewarding experience. Beyond gaining insight into your mind, you also can achieve growth and create real change in your life.
Moving from just surviving to thriving is possible.
Although, there are some risks. As you identify and explore old wounds you may experience personal distress as the process at times can be painful. When exploring trauma there is the possibility of re-traumatization.
My number one goal as your therapist is to reduce the likelihood of these risks and find methods that best serve your individual needs. Safety and stabilization are at the foundation of work we will do together.
JMP Counselling
JMP Counselling was established in May 2019.
I provide individual counselling to adults for a variety of issues under the supervision of Dr. Brenda Saxe, a registered Clinical Psychologist in Ottawa, ON.
Our first 1-3 sessions will consist of an intake assessment. This is a specific question-answer format that serves for me to gather information regarding your current functioning; history of relationships, education, health, family, trauma; and includes a behavioural and risk assessment. At this time a recommended timeframe for counselling may be determined. At the end of the intake, collaboratively we will determine treatment goals.
Goals will be specific and realistic. They allow us to maintain a focus, track progress, and identify change/growth. It is ok if goals are not established in our initial meeting. Some new goals may emerge throughout our work together.
Following intake, you will be provided with a schema questionnaire to fill out at home which will be reviewed at the next session. Other assessments may be provided to assess mood, anxiety, addictive behaviour, or impact of trauma.
From there, I will teach you about ego states which we will use as the foundation for the explorative work we will do together. Psycho-education about the effects of trauma, the nervous system, neuropsychology, and attachment theory will also be utilized throughout our work together.
